HISTORY

The single hole faucet turns 80

This innovation of our company founder Gustav Schmiedl is a real world invention.

80 years ago, three holes were needed for the fittings in washbasins. In each case for the two valve handles and in the middle for the spout, the holes were beaten by hand with a sharp hammer in the ceramic. The problem was, of course, that there was a lot of breakage. In the 1930s, Gustav Schmiedl himself knocked these holes at a wholesaler into ceramics and came up with the idea that everything could be brought together in one hole and thus reduce the breakage to a 1/3.

The result was the single-hole faucet, which he filed for a patent on December 9, 1937, which was then issued on August 15, 1939.

Today, almost all washbasin faucets are single-hole faucets, whether two-handle, single lever or electronic faucets and they all still go back to the then patent.

Faucets for generations

The Gustav Schmiedl Armaturenfabrik, based in Innsbruck, is one of the leading domestic producers of sanitary fittings, single-lever mixers, thermostats and two-handle batteries.

Not only do they have an excellent name in Austria, they are also exported to the most diverse countries in the world. The reasons for this include the widely recognized quality of Schmiedl products as well as a well-balanced price-performance ratio.

The company was founded in Hall in Tirol in 1950 by Mr. Gustav Schmiedl. Gradually, over the decades, the company has developed from a small business to a high-quality bathroom and kitchen fixture. Numerous patents were filed, which led to important innovations in the sanitary sector. To name but two, single-hole taps, the current worldwide standard, and wear brake are based on Schmiedl patents. Today, all upper parts of Schmiedl valves are equipped with wear brakes, which ensure a long service life.

The single-lever mixers include metal pistons or ceramic cartridges with volume and temperature limitation. These contribute significantly to the economical use of water. All Schmiedl products carry the Austrian quality mark and go through extensive testing during development. In the production mainly brass parts are used, the fine finishing – such as the grinding of the valve body – even today by hand. The high quality standard is ensured by continuous checks during production as well as by an extremely accurate final acceptance of the valves. Schmiedl also bears a high degree of responsibility through numerous investments in the environmental sector.

New and innovative products contribute to securing the company in the future as well. Our sensor faucets have been equipped with a patented, variable volume control, which has drastically reduced water consumption and contributed actively to environmental protection. Another Schmiedl innovation has revolutionized the shower / tub switching technology of wall-mounted faucets and banished the unsightly shift knobs.

Our exceptional design fittings are always pointing the way, with our recent innovation, the mixing technology was integrated into the valve opening of the washstand, so the circle closes again to the original invention of the single-hole faucet. Furthermore, new product lines are already being developed, which will also contribute to the company’s further success. Read more about Gustav Schmiedl and our company on Wikipedia.
